Curriculum Committee Meeting Summary for March 11
Foreign Language Program Options:

The committee discussed the reinstatement of an 8th grade exploratory language class and the eventual shift away from 5th year Spanish at the high school.  Current 8th graders would continue to have a 5th year Spanish option as seniors.  Low enrollment in 5th year Spanish precipitated the discussion.  Students in future years may pursue 5th year Spanish via alternative methods such as online programming.  Exploratory language at 8th grade will include 6 weeks each of German, French, and Spanish.  The Spanish language course at 7th grade will remain in the Foreign Language  program of studies.

2007-08 Testing Update:

Phase I (parent reports) of the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exams will soon arrive in homes if they haven't already.  Proficiency reports will arrive sometime during the last week of March so districts can begin to gauge Annual Measurable Objectives set up under the No Child Left Behind Act.

As has been mentioned at previous meetings of the Board of Education and Curriculum Committee, many schools throughout the state will fail to meet the benchmarks that now require at least 74% proficiency in Reading and 58% proficiency in Math in the tested grades.
