2017-18 High School Program of Studies
Two new course proposals were discussed for the upcoming school year in Social Studies and Tech Ed/Mathematics. Advanced Placement World History would be offered to juniors and seniors beginning in 2017. Advanced Placement courses offer students the opportunity to earn high school credit while possibly gaining eligibility to earn advanced standing in their first year of college and bypassing beginner level coursework and the tuition associated with it. Geometry in Construction would combine principles of geometry with field work in construction. Students would have opportunities to engage in community service projects and possibly connect with the city/parks department on various projects such as shelter and shed construction. Students would earn two credits in each of the content areas. A course fee would be included.
A revised sophomore English course (English 10) and Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry were discussed at the November meeting. Registration for courses is scheduled to begin January. Course enrollments will determine if these and other courses operate.
Project Search Update
Erin Meyer followed up with the committee on Project Search, which is a work placement program for students with disabilities who would be eligible to participate between the ages of 18-21. Project Search was first presented at the September Educational Services meeting. A partnership with the Watertown Regional Medical Center is being developed whereby students would be placed in a real-life work experience/immersion to help with their transition from school to work as young adults. The goal is to have 8-12 students enrolled in the program by the 2017-18 school year. A local teacher would oversee the program on a full-time basis.
