Districts have long been interested in representing student performance in terms of growth over time in addition to status or score attainment. Representing data in this manner acknowledges that students begin their academic journeys in different places. Progress over the course of a school year, therefore, is often viewed as a better barometer of what happens in school than does testing the knowledge a student might come to school having already possessed. Now, districts have the ability to demonstrate growth not just from in-house assessments, but on large scale assessments like the WKCE. Value-added is the term given to measuring growth over time. If approached constructively, value-added measures can be useful in determining where schools can repair or reinforce the factors that contribute to a student's academic growth.
The Department of Public Instruction has teamed up with the Value Added Research Center to distribute reports to districts that show growth over time on the WKCE. They will be released annually by the DPI beginning in 2013 with the launching of WISEdash, the state's new data reporting system. If you'd like to learn more about value-added reports, please contact your school principal.
