Natalie Nienhuis and Jana Zimmerman proposed the idea of an Academy for International Studies that would commence as an elective, year-long course in the fall of 2013. The course would operate within an integrated block of time during the school day and during which students would work on interdisciplinary studies involving social sciences, world languages, language arts, agriculture, and a variety of other subjects that best reflect career pathways or post-secondary areas of interest. The course would culminate with a capstone project designed to address a critical question or authentic problem.
Members of the committee gave their nod to continue gathering information and pursuing plans. Representatives from the high school planning team will reconvene with the Curriculum Committee in the fall of 2012 to discuss progress and address details related to instruction, materials, etc. The idea gained support for its emphasis on relevant outcomes for the 21st century world citizen.
