Among the exciting aspects of the work in C&I is responding to compliance measures that come from the state and federal government . One such mandate is the linking of local course offerings to federal course descriptions in the state's effort standardize student information across Wisconsin.
This Coursework Completion System is intended to capture details about a student's education beyond a WKCE score. This includes, for example, all staff connected with educating that student, the type of learning environment (e.g.,regular ed, bi-lingual, online) and grades and credits earned by that student. Not only that, but the Coursework Completion System will identify which staff members teach specific subject areas (like math and music) to that student. According to the DPI, common data standards for all districts and schools eliminates variations in how data is collected across the state. This allows the Department to offer consistent services to all schools (or so it goes).
Watertown is currently undergoing the second round of aligning local courses (K3-12) to federal course codes. The process includes sifting through a great deal of detail that's required for the state to drill down to a specific student and her or his learning experiences, past and present.
