Freshmen Academy Update –
Curt Mould shared data about the current progress of students enrolled in the Freshmen Academy at Watertown High School. A general discussion about grade point averages, discipline, and attendance rates were shared with group as well as reading level as measured by the Scholastic Reading Inventory that is administered to all freshmen. The program will continue to be built around a cohort of students that follow the same schedule in the core academic areas of English, Math, Social Studies, and Science.
Course Offerings 2010-11-
No additional courses were proposed for the general course of studies for the upcoming year, but the committee endorsed a proposal to add section(s) of Freshmen Health to the 2010 summer school program. This course would be available to members of the class of 2014 who are currently enrolled as eighth graders at Riverside Middle School. The district has looked for ways to alleviate the course load for students making the transition to high school and the Health class offers such an opportunity for those students. The curriculum for the course will follow the same objectives as those in the semester course during the school year. Students would be eligible to receive .5 credit for successful completion of the course. The summer school program will continue to offer Health for students retrieving credit for failing the class.
Integrated Project – Things Fall Apart
The committee discussed an upcoming project being coordinated at the high school by members of the English, Social Studies, Art, and Family and Consumer Education departments with support from the University of Wisconsin Center for the Humanities. The Center for the Humanities invited high school teachers to apply for funding to participate in a year-long collaborative program titled “Things Fall Apart in Wisconsin.” The title refers to African writer Chinua Achebe’s classic book, Things Fall Apart. This program promotes student as well as teacher collaboration between high school and post-secondary institutions across Wisconsin. Watertown’s proposal for an integrated project was accepted and will culminate in a day-long workshop for participating students on February 22 at Watertown High School.
