33% Who Took WKCE Were Economically Disadvantaged
Nearly 1 of every 3 students who took the Fall 2007 Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination in Watertown was economically disadvantaged. Demographic data from students in grades 3-8 and 10 is provided by CTB-McGraw Hill, the company that distributes the tests, and the Department of Public Instruction with assistance from school districts. 33% economically disadvantaged represents a 2% increase from 2006-07.
Research shows that low socioeconomic status can, and often does, adversely impact student achievement in school (
see blue box). Understanding how gaps between lower and higher income households reflect varying degrees of student preparedness for school can inform educators about necessary steps needed to help raise student achievement for all students.
