Curriculum Committee Meeting Summary for November 8

2012-13 Course Proposals

The Committee reviewed two WHS course proposals in science and one in art for the upcoming school year. Genetics is an elective course offered to juniors and seniors interested in a third year of science.  Successful completion of Biology and Integrated Chemistry/Physics or Chemistry are prerequisites.  This course would take the place of Earth Science in the high school science program of studies which will eventually be introduced in the middle grades. Anatomy and Physiology II will follow a college prep curriculum. Juniors or seniors will be required to complete A&P I.  Each course is expected to hold 1-2 sections of 20 or more students.

Committee members visited an art classroom to observe students and discuss the Advanced Glass and Jewelry Design course proposal.  This course would serve 1 section of students who successfully completed the Glass and Jewelry Designs Foundations class.  Students interested in potential careers in fine arts and the business aspect of jewelry and glass design would benefit from this course.  There would be a $20 materials fee for the class.

The Committee also reviewed a proposal to convert Honors English 11 to AP English Language and Composition for 2012-13.   This change would allow students another opportunity to earn college credit.  Curriculum changes will be made to accommodate this course.

The full Board of Education will vote to adopt the 2012-13 course book during the regular board meeting in January.
