Curriculum Committee Summary for October 12
Academic Decathlon Program-

Chris Kemp presented curriculum and budget details for the newly formed WHS Academic Decathlon program.  Competition begins on November 9th among CESA 2 participating schools and will focus on the Great Depression.  Teams consist of students in all grade ranges and grade point averages, as required by the competition rules.  Mr. Kemp is currently seeking to add students whose grade point average is not necessarily reflective of their aptitude.  The administration will build a small budget to cover entry fees and transportation costs.  The Committee gave its nod to support this extra-curricular academic program.

Agriscience Course Proposal-

The Committee reviewed a course proposal from Jon Ganske to add a course titled Ag Power & Farm Production to the 2011-12 WHS program of studies in Agricience.  This would be an advanced class for students who will enter a career in production agriculture.

Proposed units of study include Ag Machinery and Repair, Agronomy, Common Pests and Pesticides, Farm Business and Expense Records, and Livestock Nutrition.  Mr. Ganske does not anticipate any necessary staffing changes to accommodate the class.  The proposal will be part of the overall program of studies that the School Board will take action in a resolution at its January meeting.

2010 WKCE Preview

Details regarding the 2010 administration of the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination were discussed.  Noted changes include the increased benchmarks for Adequate Yearly Progress compliance of 80.5% for reading and 68.5% for math for all grade levels and groups of students.  Dave Vitale indicated that administrators anticipate groups of students not reaching these benchmarks this year as the bar continues to rise under the No Child Left Behind legislation passed in 2001.  Students in grades 3-8 and 10 will be tested in reading and math with students in grades 4, 8, and 10 also tested in science, social studies, and language arts/writing.

The Committee also reviewed the Scholastic Achievement Manager which houses reports for teachers who’ve administered the Scholastic Math Inventory and Scholastic Reading Inventory Assessments.  These and other assessments represent the District’s commitment to data-based decision making and continuing efforts to comply with Response to Intervention legislation that emerged from the reauthorized Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act in 2007.
