Curriculum Committee Meeting Summary for September 11
Skyward Update:

Dave Vitale reviewed the Family Access modules in Skyward, the District’s new student data management system.  Committee members viewed the pages that any parent with access to the system will see.  Included were attendance, grade book, and discipline information.  It was noted that parent user names and passwords were mailed to families and that accounts would remain active unless otherwise specified by parents or guardians.  A review of the system will be provided for the full school board at its September regular meeting.

Goals for 2008-09

1. Response to InterventionResponse to Intervention is a method of academic intervention designed to provide early, effective assistance to children who are having difficulty learning. Response to intervention is also designed to function as a data-based process of diagnosing learning disabilities.

The RTI method has been developed as an alternative to identifying learning disabilities with the ability-achievement discrepancy model, which requires that children exhibit a severe discrepancy between their IQ and academic achievement as measured by standardized tests (commonly known as a "wait to fail" model).

In 2008-09, WUSD staff will outline specific scientific, research-based interventions as well as methods for monitoring student progress that best serve our students and satisfy requirements set forth by the Department of Public Instruction as they related to RtI.

2. Ongoing initiatives in math and technology will continue in 2008-09.  These include Everyday Mathematics through the elementary grades and the development of the district’s Student Center, which is an online instructional platform built on Web 2.0 communication tools.
