Educational Services Meeting Summary for January 9

1.      Lincoln STEM School Evaluation Tool Preview

Jessica Wiedenfeld shared the school’s process and progress in developing a school evaluation tool that captures key elements of STEM education and learner habits of mind.  The tool is intended to be a periodic self-assessment of progress over time in the areas of Student Learning, STEM Experiences, 21st Century Skills, Social-Emotional Growth, and Leadership. 

2.      Personalized Learning – Learner Profile Update

Sarah Skretta discussed efforts to collect a combination of intellectual and affective information about students’ learning skills set, academic status, learning drivers and demographic data.  Students maintain learner profiles throughout the year that will eventually travel with them.  Learner profiles are intended to provide a basis for personalized learning and is part of a greater Honeycomb Model developed by the Institute for Personalized Learning - http://institute4pl.org/index.php/our-model/

3.      Student Presenters – STEM Showcase

Tina Oiler and Sarah Skretta introduced their students to the Committee who witnessed presentations on Project Lead the Way curriculum modules, passion projects, reading and math data logs, as well as a Lincoln STEM school video shared by Kayla Wendt.  The student presenters ranged from first through third grade.  Teachers also discussed inter-disciplinary connections between subject areas and the impact of Project Based Learning and the engineer design process on student motivation. 

4.      UW Whitewater – Lincoln STEM Science Outreach Grant Update

UW Whitewater’s Science Outreach department is connecting with Lincoln to support STEM programming with a $5,000 grant for professional development and materials that support literacy and science.  Further details will be shared in the coming weeks.

5.      Riverside Middle School – Personalized Learning Leadership Design Academy Grant Update

$12,000 was awarded to Riverside Middle School and the Riverside Academy by the Institute for Personalized Learning for the development and expansion of principles of personalized learning within the Academy, and Riverside, in general.  A Leadership Design Team will work toward this goal using resources available through the grant.
