Curriculum Committee Meeting Summary for October 14
1. High School Social Studies Field Trip Discussion

Chris Kemp presented details of a proposed field trip for primarily junior and sophomore level students in the summer of 2009.  Students will take a two week trip to east coast historic sites combining support for the U.S. History curriculum with college visits to multiple universities and colleges in the region.  Mr. Kemp planned many similar trips with students at his former high school, Janesville Craig, and would use that experience to plan the trip for Watertown students.

The minimum requirements for students would be a B average with no disciplinary record.  Participating students will pay for coach bus transportation, lodging, food, and other related costs.  Estimated student cost is in the vicinity of $1,100-$1,200 based on previous trips, but it may vary.

2. Intermediate Algebra Course Addition

Scott Bostwick and Scot Meyer, math department chair, outlined plans to add Intermediate Algebra to the high school mathematics program of studies for the 2009-10 school year.  The course proposal is in response to the program’s need for students to more successfully bridge the transition from Algebra to Advanced Algebra.

The impact on the math program in the short term is that 2-3 fewer sections of Advanced Algebra would be offered in 2009-10 to adjust for the additional sections of Intermediate Algebra.  The course will appear in the 2009-10 WHS Course Registration Book.  The Board of Education will need to approve this and other course additions at its regularly scheduled meeting in February 2009.

3. WSAS Preview

Dave Vitale previewed the upcoming state testing that begins on October 27th and extends to November 28th.  Tests include both the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam - Criterion Referenced Test in grades 3-8 and 10 and the Wisconsin Alternate Assessment for students with special needs for whom the regular test is not appropriate as determined through student Individual Educational Plans.  Once again this year, students are expected to reach 58% Proficient and Advanced in Math and 74% Proficient and Advanced in Reading, according to the state accountability standards and No Child Left Behind.

4. Technology Education Foundation Grant

Dave Vitale updated the committee on the district’s reception of a $6,400 grant from the Technology Education Foundation.  The grant will equip 5-6 classrooms with teacher workstations for integrating technology into teaching and learning.
