Educational Services Committee Meeting for February 11

Title I Schoolwide Services and Reading Program Update:

Dave Vitale and Gail Kottwitz shared plans and timelines for transitioning to Title I schoolwide services for 2014-15.  A Title I school is eligible to become a schoolwide program when the poverty level is at or above 40%.  Schoolwide programs have latitude to determine how to organize operations and allocate the funds. A major benefit is that they do not identify particular children as eligible for service, but use all allocated funds and school personnel to serve any student in need.  Each qualifying elementary school will apply to the Department of Public Instruction by April 15.

Nancy Zimmermann and Karen Murphree updated the Committee on the implementation of the new Journeys reading program at the elementary level.

Charter School Planning Update

The Committee was apprised of recent developments in the planning of Endeavor Charter School, including staff training, enrollments, and upcoming meetings.  The Committee also learned that the school is approved for infusing Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science standards into its interdisciplinary workshops and projects.

Additions:

The steering committee will begin planning for Get R.E.A.L., the WHS financial literacy simulation and capstone event for courses in Economics, Math, and Business Education.  The event will be held on Friday, April 11 in the WHS gymnasium.
