Curriculum Committee Meeting Summary for October 15

Preview of Professional Development Day - October 25

The Committee previewed the details of the upcoming professional development day on October 25. Staff will be focusing on reading program support, curriculum design and development, and increasing awareness and participation in the District's pilot of the Effectiveness Project, which is a new and required professional evaluation system to be released in 2014.

AP Macroeconomics Proposal

Support was granted for forwarding a resolution to the full Board of Education to vote on the addition of Advanced Placement Macroeconomics to the high school program of studies in 2014-15.  The College Board approved a syllabus submitted by Bruce Foley, who would teach the course.  Credit would be available in either Social Studies or Business Education.

Charter School Planning Update

The Committee heard from Mark Holland, who had recently attended a charter school governance board training as a liaison to the full Board.  Planning continues with site visits scheduled for staff to other area charter schools as well as  the development of the charter contract, which will be voted on by the full Board of Education in December.

Review of Reading and Math Data

Dave Vitale reviewed the Curriculum and Instruction reading and math benchmark and summative data as well as teaching and learning goals that were shared with the Board at its June 2013 meeting.

Staff Evaluation Update

Details of the previously mentioned Effectiveness Project pilot were discussed.  Teachers, specialists, and building administrators will all participate in the pilot.  Each will use a web-based tool called My Learning Plan to create and maintain records and files of work that demonstrates progress toward professional goals in 2013-14.
