Common Core Standards Drafted
As one of 48 states committed to the Common Core State Standards project, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is encouraging educators, professional organizations, and community members to review the first public draft of the Common Core State Standards for English/language arts and mathematics.

Choosing the Right Classroom Assessment
Recent discussions among staff at WHS and RMS have led to the identification of the attached grid that links various assessment methods with a particular learning target (or style). The grid is a modification of work on effective classroom assessments by Rick Stiggins, founder of the Assessment Training Institute. New Wisconsin Assessments
Many questions have emerged following the recent news about transitioning from the WKCE to a more balanced assessment system. Linked in the blue box is an FAQ document provided by the Department of Public Instruction that answers many of those questions.
New assessments will surely include items that reflect new state and national standards in the core areas as well.

National Standards Discussion
The recent discussion among education leaders nationwide to introduce, debate, and possibly adopt a common set of academic standards from kindergarten through twelfth grade marks an attempt to address what some have called the "proficiency illusion." In other words, low benchmark standards for measuring proficiency have created a false sense of achievement in school districts across many states.

Curriculum Committee Meeting Summary for April 14
2008 WKCE Results Review- Committee members, Dave Vitale, and Curt Mould reviewed Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam results from the fall of 2008 for students in grades 3-8, and 10. The review included only students in the general population and not isolated results from students in sub groups such as special education or economically disadvantaged.
